About BombayCafe

BombayCafe is a music library put together by hand. Thousands of YouTube videos, each one picked and filed into genres, countries, artists and a handful of themes that didn't fit anywhere else. It works a bit like a record shop whose owner has too many opinions and doesn't mind sharing them.

You can browse by country, which gets you Ethio-jazz from Mulatu Astatke, sixties Cambodian rock from Ros Serey Sothea and Sinn Sisamouth, Turkish psych from Selda Bağcan, or the Flying Nun bands of New Zealand like The Clean and Tall Dwarfs. Browse by genre instead and you'll find krautrock from Can, dub from Lee "Scratch" Perry and Augustus Pablo, English folk from Shirley Collins and Bert Jansch, the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders, and the home-taped pop of R. Stevie Moore and Guided by Voices.

A lot of pages also have short write-ups on the artists: who they were, where they came from, and why they're worth hearing. Hit Play All and let a collection run, shuffle it, or save the videos you like to Favorites. Favorites are kept in your own browser, so there's no account to make.

Everything plays through YouTube's own player. The music belongs to the artists and labels who made it, and this site just helps you find it.
