Endicott, a basement, 1977
Gary Wilson
Gary Wilson was born in Endicott, New York, in 1953. In 1969, still a teenager, he went to visit John Cage, who encouraged him to be provocative, and he took that seriously. In 1977 he recorded an album in his parents' basement and released it himself, an odd mix of lounge jazz, funk and lo-fi pop. Then he moved to California, and by the early 1980s he had drifted out of music. Beck name-checked him in 1996. Motel Records reissued the album and tracked him down in San Diego, playing in a lounge act, and in 2002 he came back with a show at Joe's Pub in New York. Stones Throw released Mary Had Brown Hair in 2004, his first new album in almost thirty years, and he has kept recording since, including a 2019 collaboration with R. Stevie Moore.
