Brisbane, a cult hit in France
The Apartments
The Apartments took their name from Billy Wilder's 1960 film and formed in Brisbane in 1978 around Peter Milton Walsh, the one member who never left. Walsh spent a short time playing guitar in The Go-Betweens and later played bass in Laughing Clowns. The debut album, The Evening Visits...and Stays for Years, came out on Rough Trade in 1985 and turned into a cult hit in France. Drift, A Life Full of Farewells, Fête Foraine and Apart followed, the last in 1997. That year Walsh's son was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. He died in 1999, and Walsh stepped away from music. He came back in 2007, and No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal, released in 2015, was the French magazine Magic's album of the year.
