Indo-Trinidadian chutney, 1970s
Mookraj Sahadeo
Mookraj Sahadeo was one of the early Indo-Trinidadian chutney singers of the 1970s, mixing English lyrics with Indian-style instrumentation while the genre was still finding its shape. He was less prolific and less famous than contemporaries such as Sundar Popo, whose records sit alongside his in this collection. In the mid-to-late 1970s he cut a handful of singles for Trinidad's Sammy Bros. Records, some of them backed by the Gemini Indian Orchestra, and those rare 45s have lately found a new audience among crate-digging radio DJs.
