Big in Thailand, unknown abroad
Y Not 7
Y Not 7 formed in 1994 under a different name before signing to GMM Grammy, Thailand's largest label, and spent the rest of the decade as a proper mainstream rock act. They weren't an idol group. They were a guitar-bass-drums band, fronted by a singer known for going full throttle live. Their 1999 album Yeah! reportedly held the top of the charts for six straight weeks, during the last years radio still ran Thai pop, and younger bands still cover their music. Even so, for a real hit act on Thailand's biggest label, they have essentially no footprint in English at all. At home they were mainstream, and outside Thailand almost nobody has heard of them.
