A Finnish model, a French composer
Mi and L'au
Mira Romantschuk, a Finnish former model, and Laurent "L'au" Leclère, a French soundtrack musician, met in Paris and then left the city for the Finnish countryside, where they wrote and recorded together as Mi and L'au. Their self-titled 2005 debut came out on Michael Gira's Young God Records, the same New York label behind Swans. Gira himself said its stripped-down voice, finger-picked guitar, and celeste carried "the naked quality of certain early Nico recordings." Reviewers reached for Nick Drake and Will Oldham as readily as Nico. The duo has kept working quietly ever since, releasing music as recently as 2026, mostly outside any scene or label roster. Their tie to Finland is mainly the cabin they chose to make the music in.
