Copenhagen, 1969 — folk into prog
Culpeper's Orchard
Culpeper's Orchard formed in Copenhagen at the end of 1969 around English-born singer and guitarist Cy Nicklin. He gathered Danish and English musicians (Niels Henriksen, Michael Friis and drummer Rodger Barker), and they played a first show in January 1970. Their self-titled 1971 debut and 1972's Second Sight, both on Polydor, leaned toward the folk- and country-rock of the Band and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. A later reunion, recorded simply as Culpeper for 1977's All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go, drifted toward progressive and jazz rock. The Polydor years were overlooked for a long time, until the remastered anthology Mountain Music collected them in 2020.
